The Tools and Techniques of NLP are all outcome focused. This is a major reason why NLP helps people get better results. You begin with the outcome that you want then work backwards to figure out how to get there. Stephen Covey captured this best with one of his seven habits: “Begin with the end in mind”.
In NLP, we can then figure out what tools do we need that best helps us get that outcome. Therefore, If you don’t do this, you may become problem focussed. You will recognised this in their language. When you ask them what they want, they will tell you about their problems – what they don’t want.
That’s not outcome focused! That’s present-state focused and if you’re present state focused you’re thinking about all the problems you have today. If you spend all your time thinking about problems, your life is going to be full of problems!
You may find that this is true for you? It sounds like a simple concept but I promise you, this one concept could change your life.
Secondly, when people talk about what they want, it in often in reference to aspirations and goals that are not tangible.
This means that most people describe what they want in terms of feelings or values. I want to feel fulfilled, happy, content, confident.
These are not well formed because they are not tied to a specific action, or external measurement like losing a certain amount of weight in a certain time frame.
Therefore, if “Freedom” is what you want, you can experience “Freedom” right now by imagining time you felt free and you can access that feeling right now.
