What are the NLP Conversation Frames?

In NLP, a frame is the context or perspective through which a communication takes place. Conversation frames are used to direct discussions, manage objections, establish outcomes, and create new possibilities. Skilled NLP practitioners use these frames fluidly to guide conversations toward productive results.

Evidence Frame A frame that directs toward the desired outcome or state. Used to establish direction when people are off point. Example: "So how do we know we are on track?"

Backtrack Frame A frame used to gently draw someone back to the main discussion by returning to their key points. Example: "Just a moment ago you said X — I want to get back to that and explore it a bit more."

Relevancy Frame A frame that challenges the relevancy of a point and removes issues that are not relevant to the agreed outcome. Example: "How does this relate to the outcome we agreed at the meeting?"

Contrast Frame A frame that gives someone a contrast on a subject, which changes their perception of its value. Example: "How much money have I saved you by asking these questions?"

Ecology Frame A frame that establishes the wider purpose of an outcome and checks for unintended consequences. Example: "What will be gained or lost by this outcome? What will happen if you do or don't achieve it?"

As If Frame A frame where new choices are made available by providing a hypothetical context that allows access to information not normally available. Example: "Let's say we were to go ahead and allocate a bigger budget — what would you spend it on?"
